Located in the serene countryside of Queens Nympton, NPAS Devon has taken the lead in designing a highly sustainable new build at Woodhouse. The project involves demolishing an existing barn to make way for a modern 4-bedroom dwelling with a detached garage, focusing on creating a home that interacts harmoniously with its rural setting. The client wanted a home that balances contemporary living with sustainability, reflecting both the character of the area and the natural landscape.

Our design approach at NPAS embraces this vision by replacing the overbearing mass of the barn with a more streamlined and thermally efficient dwelling. The new home integrates seamlessly into its surroundings, using modern construction techniques to ensure high energy efficiency, while incorporating traditional architectural elements to respect the site's agricultural roots.

The Woodhouse project demonstrates NPAS’s commitment to creating homes that blend form and function. By prioritising sustainability and biodiversity, we’ve incorporated new habitat foraging areas, increased tree planting, and thoughtful landscaping, which enhance the site’s ecological value.

From the planning stage, NPAS worked closely with the client and local authority to ensure a smooth process, leveraging the existing planning permission for the barn conversion to deliver a project with a smaller environmental footprint. The new design offers a more energy-efficient solution than the original scheme, with a focus on modern living standards and minimal environmental impact.

The final design offers a highly efficient, durable dwelling that meets contemporary building regulations while fostering a connection with the surrounding landscape—a true reflection of NPAS’s dedication to creating bespoke, high-quality homes that fit seamlessly into their environment.
