From the outset, the design strategy was centred around retaining the essence of the former agricultural buildings, ensuring that the new dwellings remained sympathetic to their setting. Key elements such as scale, form, and materiality were carefully considered to maintain the appearance of traditional barns. The pitched roof profiles and restrained palette of natural materials reflect the character of agricultural architecture, while the introduction of large glazed sections and subtle contemporary detailing adds a modern touch, making the homes distinct yet respectful of their context.
One of the primary goals of the project was to deliver highly sustainable homes that interact harmoniously with the surrounding environment. Both dwellings incorporate energy-efficient building techniques and renewable energy systems, reducing their environmental impact. The design also emphasises the importance of landscaping and biodiversity. Generous landscaping was introduced around the site, along with the establishment of new habitats and native planting schemes, enhancing the ecological value of the area.
The final result is a pair of thoughtfully designed homes that contribute positively to the local character and landscape. By combining traditional agricultural elements with modern design features, the dwellings not only fulfil the client’s desire for sustainable living but also reinforce a sense of place, creating a development that is both visually beneficial and environmentally conscious. This project showcases how contemporary architecture can work within a rural setting, respecting its heritage while embracing innovation and sustainability.
